Julio Aleman

Julio Aleman

Artist:  Julio Aleman explores identity, skin, movement, and color interaction, as well as the physical and social spaces that they occupy in his oil paintings. Julio’s work obsesses over the details that bring his subjects to life, engaging in the intricacies of color dynamics and the depth, volume, and movement those interactions create. Color is used to create visual interest, drawing in the viewer, and providing an intimate moment of unspoken dialogue and human connection. Julio’s relentless attention to gesture and developing the human form further develops this personal experience with the viewer.

His portraits celebrate the overwhelming strength he receives from the communities he belongs to. Brown skin, Latinidad, queerness, and underrepresented beauty tell the stories of his subjects’ power and human experience. At the base of his paintings is a shared experience of love, understanding, and connection.

Currently living in Portland, Oregon, Julio continues to draw inspiration from his Mexican-American heritage rooted in San Antonio, Texas. His desire to normalize and amplify his brown, queer voice within art communities that otherwise don’t look like him drives his work and his passion for creating.
