Mae Eskenazi

Mae Eskenazi

Artist:  Mae’s work aims to explore the dichotomy between the spectacle and the banal. Exploring queerness and its enmeshment with capitalism, whiteness, and (in)accessibility, their work is created with tenderness, aiming to serve the community that is queer people, trans people and chronically ill folk from whom the work is informed by and the organizing and care work is performed alongside. They are currently based in New York City.

Artist Statement: We Make The Banal Feel Spectacular explores the politics of visibility and legibility as they are mediated by photography’s propensity to privilege vision above other ways of knowing. By using queerness as a method rather than direct aim of representation, We Make The Banal Feel Spectacular strives to emphasize and enact malleability and complexity through the photographic medium while attempting to subvert the use of the term queer from noun to verb. We Make The Banal Feel Spectacular proposes a stitching together of the ordinary and everyday in conjunction with depictions of the spectacular, beautiful, and normative.
